Issues

As School Committee Member at Large, Darren will use his financial expertise to fight for schools that every Everett parent can be proud of by:

  • Managing school budgets
    • Every Everett resident and parent deserves to know their tax dollars are being spent wisely—that the school board money is being spent to benefit all students, not just a few.
    • Decisions by the current school board have led to confusion and concern about the budget process. It’s time to bring transparency and more people in on the decision making process.
    • When you elect me to School Board, I pledge to:
      • Oversee a competitive bid practice to use our tax dollars to get the maximum benefit for our students
      • Create regular finance reporting
      • Facilitate in-depth discussions with local residents about how budgets are being utilized
  • Offering more extracurricular activities and ESL resources
    • With overcrowded classrooms and too few resources, our teachers are at a large disadvantage. We can and need to do better for them—they need the tools to help all students, not just the English speaking ones
    • Everett is a diverse community. Whatever language a child speaks growing up shouldn’t hamper their education. To do that we need more resources in the classroom to serve the unique needs of our community.
    • We need school leaders who are serious about meeting the community where they are. When you elect me to the school board, I will:
      • Research grants and help individual principals apply
      • Make sure students will get the great education they deserve
  • Addressing overcrowding in schools
    • Every student, no matter where in Everett they live, should have the best education to succeed in life. Our community and businesses benefit from well-educated students.Yet now our students are in overcrowded classrooms, there is no funding for full-time pre-K, and teachers are working at a disadvantage. Why is this happening when we have a perfectly good school standing empty?
    • In my time as a City Councilor, I realized there is a two-way street between the mayor and the de facto voting school committee. But our mayor, who is supposed to work for and with us, squashed the use of Pope John High School because of a personal issue with the former superintendent. Education is a personal cause, but personal matters shouldn’t get in the way of what’s right for our children.
    • When you elect me to School Board, I will address school overcrowding so every child gets the care and attention they need
